WOW! Well done to all drivers who took part in our mammoth PKC45K races tonight. It was a very tough event and everyone who raced drove brilliantly and in most cases looked like they could carry on for another 45 minutes!
Congratulations to Colin Rowland Mason (Johnston) who won the Lightweight race and to both Damien Holmes (Haverfordwest) and Tess Howell (Drefach Felindre) for winning their Heavyweight races. All 3 drivers have won a place on our F1 factory tour in December!
22 drivers took to the track in three different races for the event. The grid was decided at random so it was entirely down to driver talent as to how the race would unfold. John Mason (Johnston) took command of the first race of the evening and controlled the pace in the early stages before Damien was able to take place. Once in the lead, Damien built a comfortable lead over second place Brian Newton (Llanybri) to complete 104 laps. Brian fought off challenges from both Rob Maynard (Carmarthen) and Nathan Jenkins (Llandybie) to finish second, third and fourth respectively.
The second heavyweight group saw a dominant Tess storm into the lead off the line where she was able to systematically build her lead and also post a final time of 104 laps. James Williams (Swansea) beat the traffic early on to stay second but lost out to Jess Holmes (Johnston) and Royston Badham(Pembroke Dock) in the closing stages of the race allowing Jess and Royston to take their first podium of the year.
Next up was the lightweight race with Melany Howell (Drefach Felindre) starting on pole and using it to her advantage to put distance between herself and second placed William Samuel Dolbear (Sageston) who was busy defending from the pursuing drivers preventing him from chasing down Mel. A defining moment of the race came early when Sam Joseph(Swansea) opted to take his mandatory rest break to undercut Dolbear, but didn't realise the pitlane was still closed. The costly error would eventally demote Sam to third at the end of the race. Meanwhile Melany looked set to claim a dominant win until a very rare mistake saw her make contact with the tyre barrier and took Sam and Colin back into contention. Colin was fast and consistent and was often quicker than his two rivals and was able to significantly close the gap when both Mel and Sam ran into traffic. As the flag dropped, Sam took the win, followed by Colin and Mel but after Sam's earlier penalty was applied, Colin took the top step.
We would like to say thank you to all the staff at West Wales Karting for hosting the event and providing refreshments to the drivers during their pit stops.
